Though disasters and tragedies happen on a frighteningly regular basis, many people don’t plan for what they’ll do if it impacts their lives. They do absolutely nothing and then when SHTF, they’re usually in shock and scrambling to find a way to make sure they get their needs met.

It’s a terrible thing to need food or water for yourself and even more for your loved ones when you don’t have a way to get it. There are others, however, who do understand how important preparation is.

They set out to find a decent bug out bag. They make sure to get a top of the line bag. They’re determined when a bad situation happens, it won’t be their family who is without.

What these people do is gather these bags and fill them with the supplies they believe they’ll need. These supplies in the bug out bag intended to keep them alive.

They believe the work is over after that. But what they don’t realize is that the bug out bag will only hold enough supplies to last them about three days.

That means they’ll be okay and they’ll make it, at least until the 72 hours passes. But what then? This is the biggest mistake the new survivalists make. They don’t prepare for anything past the immediate need.

Some of this is because they have a mindset they only need to get through three days and then surely things will get better by then. But just look at the recent hurricanes in Texas and Puerto Rico, which took much, MUCH longer than three days to clear up.

When a devastating hurricane rolls in, it can incapacitate an area for weeks. A bag meant to last for three days just isn’t going to cut it. You can’t fall into the trap of thinking your survival will be taken care of if you just pack a bug out bag.

You need to think about your long-term survival plans and what supplies you must have in store for your survival needs.

You can’t focus on short term even if you don’t have all the money you need for supplies right now. You want the best types of supplies as well as knowledge of how to store these supplies.
